The London Accident Prevention Council’s (LAPC’s) 86th Annual General Meeting took place at The Guildhall in the City of London on Wednesday 30 July. The meeting took the form of a mini conference, the theme of which was ‘Driver Impairment’.
Delegates – which included London borough mayors, councillors and road safety officers - were addressed by experts in the field of drugs, fatigue and driving. Speakers included the managing director of Awake, and Roger Agombar, the DfT’s police liaison officer.
After lunch, delegates were treated to a dramatic ‘read-through’ preview of the forthcoming TIE production ‘Pills, Thrills @ Automobiles’ by the APE Theatre Company, which will go on tour in the autumn.
To mark the sad passing of LAPC’s chairman earlier this year, the annual Laurie Bunn Road Safety Award has been established to honour Laurie’s contribution to the work of the Council over many years. The first award was announced and presented by Laurie’s widow, Eileen, at the meeting.
Selected from four nominations, this year’s winner was Jean Wilkinson, (pictured) Walking Bus/Safer Routes to School Officer for the London Borough of Bromley. Jean was selected for her highly successful work in establishing Walking Buses in the borough. She developed the Walking Bus CD-ROM and is on course to achieve a 10 per cent take up by children in Bromley in using the Walking Bus over the next 24 months.
