Driver Tiredness workshop for Shell Ireland

On July 7th/8th AWAKE ran a 2-day Driver Tiredness workshop for Shell Ireland and Shell's contractors in Ireland. Attendees included Driver Trainers, Health and Safety Managers, Contract Managers and Transport Managers. The event, held in Shell Ireland's Dublin offices, was also attended by HSSE managers representing 3 Shell regions in Europe.

The event culminated with an action planning session to enable the companies to propose strategies for rolling out the training to their workforces.

The AWAKE programme organiser said: "This was the first event we have run in Ireland and - as with our previous workshop for Shell - a key feature was the involvement of their contractors. This enabled honest dialogue and discussion of the constraints that need to be overcome in order to address driver tiredness.

"The workshops are obviously a great way of raising awareness, but perhaps the most important feature is that, by the end of the workshop there is a clear commitment on behalf of all concerned to make changes that will lead to a reduction in sleep-related vehicle accidents. The workshops are highly interactive and through their active participation the group acquire key skills that they can apply in their own workforces."

Similar events are now being planned for other regions in Europe, as well as Africa.

Feedback from attendees:

"Excellent course - gave me an insight into tiredness and fatigue I was not aware of." (Safety advisor)

"I found all the workshop useful. It gave me a better understanding. We will create a project to ensure all drivers have this training." (Contracts Manager)

"Course was all very useful - especially finding out periods in day when you are most likely to experience tiredness. Also learnt how to control this and inform others." (Transport Manager)

"The practical workshops I found good as you get a better understanding when practically involved instead of just listening." (Contracts Supervisor)

"All of the content was excellent." (Contract Manager)
