AWAKE goes International with BP

BP has a long tradition of attention to road safety, and in 2004 the gloves are off. BP has launched 5 ‘Driver Standards’ or golden rules that will apply internationally to professional drivers and sales people alike. The standards cover the driver tiredness and other issues such as the use of mobile phones and seatbelts.
Awake assisted with the development of BP’s Driver tiredness Standard using research conducted at the Loughborough Sleep Research Centre and around the world.
BP appreciates that for their driver standards to have effect the safety message has to come from the top and there needs to be company-wide appreciation of driver tiredness and the associated dangers. To achieve these aims, Awake has developed an in-house fatigue management programme, aimed at engaging managers, drivers and drivers’ families.
Since the middle of 2003 we have been training BP trainers in the issue of driver tiredness. We have commenced the training process with BP Air, BP Marine and recently travelled to Hong Kong to present to Asian BP employees. The training has been translated into 13 languages and we have trained trainers from the following countries:
