AWAKE at the 2005 International Conference on Fatigue Management in Transportation Operations

Professor Jim Horne and Dr. Louise Reyner of AWAKE, and Diane Flatley of the Loughborough Sleep Research Centre, will be presenting their research paper entitled “Sleep-related crashes on UK roads in light and darkness” at the International Conference on Fatigue Management in Transportation Operations to be held in Seattle, Washington (USA) from 11 September to 15 September 2005. The conference is sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Transport Canada and will be held at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel and Towers in Seattle, Washington. The conference seeks to facilitate cross-fertilization of ideas to achieve excellence in the field. It will provide structured discussion sessions on specific technical issues, interactive presentations and themed plenary papers. Interactive panels will provide an opportunity to hear from subject-area experts and to exchange information on the latest research findings, as well as current and future fatigue management tools and techniques. Participants will have ample opportunities to network with speakers and other attendees. This conference is expected to attract representatives from all transportation sectors, industry, university research centres and government agencies from around the world. This important, timely event will feature internationally-renowned speakers and panelists who will offer industry, research, and regulatory perspectives on current and future research and technologies related to fatigue in transportation operations. In December 2003 they were awarded the Prince Michael of Kent International Road Safety Award for their work to raise awareness of the dangers of driver tiredness. As part of their work AWAKE undertakes risk assessments to determine the extent to which fatigue plays a part in a company’s accidents as well as providing training for commercial drivers and others involved in safety critical work.
